Swiss Youth Hostels: Our home over the long weekend

During our long weekend in Saas-Fee, we stay at wellnessHostel4000 – one of the youth hostels with its own wellness area, gym and indoor swimming pool. It doesn’t get any better than that, does it?! We booked a 4‑bed family room with its own shower and WC. The youth hostel is centrally located in car-free Saas-Fee. From here, you can walk to all mountain railways and activities, as well as restaurants and shops.

In addition, you’ll receive a Saastal Card included with every stay. This card allows you to use (almost) all mountain railways and public transport free of charge. You can also get discounts on a range of activities (see further down in the blog). And you can even book a packed lunch for your hikes from the youth hostel. And you know what? The breakfast buffet is always included in the room rate at Swiss Youth Hostels!

In the following blog post, you’ll find a whole load of tips for families in Saas-Fee.

The perfect family hike: From Hannig to Saas-Fee

A few minutes’ walk from wellnessHostel4000 is the gondola cableway that takes you up to the Hannig. Up here, you have a wonderful view of Saas-Fee, the Allalin and the surrounding mountains. With a bit of luck, you might even spot a marmot. There’s a brand-new playground right next to the Bergrestaurant Hannig. After a glass of Valais wine on the sun terrace, we embark on a relaxed hike en route to the valley. Varied and winding paths lead us past alpine roses and on towards the village. In Melchbode we discover another playground with fully-equipped barbecue spots. The perfect place to take a break! Reinvigorated, the hike continues, and we discover a Märliweg – a fairytale path – coming up on the village and thus also the youth hostel. Now it’s time to relax in the indoor pool. 😊

Entertainment in the village: The Feeblitz and the minigolf course

A stroll through Saas-Fee with its old storehouses and lovely chalets is an absolute highlight. However, we’d like a little more variety: That’s why the beautifully situated minigolf course and the Feeblitz toboggan run are just the thing for us. Fun for the whole family is guaranteed here! You get a discount on both activities with the Saastal Card.

Treat yourself to culinary delights: At Waldhüs Bodmen

I couldn’t imagine a more perfect restaurant than Waldhüs Bodmen, which is located in a beautiful wooded area around a 15 minutes’ walk from the youth hostel: Next to the cosy chalet with sun terrace, you’ll find a large children’s playground, where goats and alpacas can be seen grazing. The hostess has also set up a playroom for the kids inside. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a table by the large window that separates the rabbit and guinea pig hutch from the guest area. While enjoying our Valais rösti hash browns, home-made spaetzle noodles and other specialities, we can watch the sweet little animals. An absolute highlight and warmly recommended if you want to make the whole family happy with a restaurant visit.

A visit to the marmot Eddie on the Spielboden

Marmots are everywhere in Saas-Fee. And so, a visit to the Spielboden is simply a must for families: This is where Eddie the marmot lives. During the gondola ride, you can enjoy an audio play by Eddie and his friends. Once at the top, the Marmot Trail awaits you, passing numerous marmot caves. With a little luck, you’ll see the furry residents and even be able to feed them.

Up high: On the Allalin, you can get your share of snow and ice even in summer

Getting to the Allalin is spectacular: The Metro Alpin funicular (not included in the Saastal Card) takes you through the mountain to the glacier. Up here, you have an absolutely spectacular view and, of course, snow and ice in summer and winter! This is a very special experience for us. In the revolving restaurant, you have a wonderful panoramic view – we ordered the «Grosis emergency box» as an afternoon snack, which not only looks great, but tastes great, too. Unfortunately, the Ice Pavilion was closed during our visit. Admission is normally included in the ticket price and the pavilion certainly would’ve been a highlight for the kids.

Overall impression of our long weekend in Saas-Fee

In my opinion, two nights at wellnessHostel4000 in Saas-Fee are the absolute minimum. There are so many highlights for families in the Saas Valley – you could easily spend longer holidays here. That’s why we’re sure to come back soon. And we’re sure to stay at wellnessHostel4000, as it’s a perfect combination of all amenities for the whole family.
