Honestly? We are totally unfamiliar with the region around Martigny! It’s high time to change that and get to know the many activities for families. Be sure to read on to hear more about our jam-packed trip.
Swiss Youth Hostels: Our home over the weekend
During our long weekend, we spend the night at Martigny Youth Hostel, which is ideally located for all the activities around town. Although the hostel is almost 400 years old, it offers every comfort and features super modern furniture.
We opted for one of the spacious family rooms with its own shower and WC. In addition, you will find a cosy lounge, a terrace for drinks, a games room with table football and, of course, a breakfast room. Because did you know? Breakfast is always included in the accommodation rates at the youth hostels.

Martigny art city and much more
Martigny is known as the art city – and rightly so, as the internationally renowned Fondation Pierre Gianadda is located here. Of course, we also pay it a visit, as it can be perfectly combined with a round of «Kid’nous trois». This free game from Martigny Tourismus gives kids a fun opportunity to get to know the city: From the city centre to the Roman amphitheatre, it’s all covered.

With so much to take in and so much walking, the children’s feet are worn out, but thankfully the «Baladeur» comes to the rescue. The hop-on hop-off mini-train takes you to all the sights – including those a little further away. We end the day with an aperitif on the terrace of the youth hostel. The lively, picturesque alley is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a glass of wine.

The region around Martigny also offers an incredible number of awesome excursions – we’ve tested some of them for you:
Lac Souterrain Saint-Leonard
Europe’s largest underground lake is a natural spectacle and a real highlight for me this weekend. Discover the crystal-clear lake and the Saint-Leonard Cave on a guided boat tour.

Grotte aux Fées
Above Saint-Maurice is the «Fairy Grotto», where you can walk around half a kilometre into the Earth’s interior. With a little luck, you might also spot the faeries in the grotto.

Les Bains de Lavey
Relax and unwind in the warmest thermal water in Switzerland? Then Lavey is just the right destination for you. Most indoor and outdoor pools are accessible to families with children aged 4 and over. For us, the highlight is definitely the pool where they play music underwater. Soooo relaxing!

Labyrinthe Aventures
Here, you can really let off steam, as climbing, sliding and playing are the order of the day! Besides the large labyrinth at the heart of the park, you’ll find activities for kids of all ages.

Overall impression of our long weekend in Martigny
Spending a weekend in a region we had never even heard of before definitely has the potential to feel like a holiday. Martigny offers fantastic options for families – whether indoors or outdoors. At the same time, the youth hostel is the perfect home away from home that won’t put too much strain on the family budget.
