A long family weekend with tons of highlights in Graubünden

Take your little adventurer on a journey of discovery through beautiful, autumnal Graubünden and find out what this region has to offer for families! We arrive by train and use the Mobility electric car on site for more flexibility in getting to our different excursion highlights: from the bluest lake to the Swiss Grand Canyon and sweet squirrels to historic trains.

Four days in Graubünden are nowhere near enough. The region has an incredible amount to offer, especially for families. Take the train and arrive in Chur relaxed. This is where we pick up our Mobility electric car for the next few days*. The e‑car allows us to put together a varied programme of activities. Whether for young or old. Activities that can be done no matter the weather are also worth their weight in gold, as you may be surprised by snow, especially in autumn. Be sure to read on to hear more about our jam-packed trip.

  • The entire trip can easily be done with public transport.

Swiss Youth Hostels: Our home over the weekend

During our long weekend in Graubünden, we first stay at Valbella-Lenzerheide Youth Hostel, followed by two nights at wellnessHostel3000 in Laax.

As always, both youth hostels are perfect for families: From a spacious family room with its own shower and WC, to a games room and a cosy lounge, you’ll find everything you need to make your stay perfect. wellnessHostel3000 in Laax even features an indoor pool with a cool slide and super-modern, spacious wellness facilities. It’s the perfect place to relax after your outdoor activities.
By the way: Breakfast is always included in the room rate at the Swiss Youth Hostels! You can always optionally book dinner (including vegetarian and vegan meals).

In addition to cosy rooms and lounge areas, wellnessHostel3000 also offers fun for the little ones and relaxation for the grown-ups. © Yvonne Schönthal

Lenzerheide region: Jö and yay!

In Lenzerheide, we visit the Squirrel Forest, which is right by the beautiful Heidsee lake. At the playground, we already see two of the curious rodents, who are probably looking for their winter supplies. The walk through the woods is characterised by many “aww” moments (or “Jö” here in Switzerland ). We must have seen at least ten squirrels up close within a very short space of time. The forest is a real highlight for families. Maybe you’re up for a walk around the Heidsee lake? Here you’ll find two more playgrounds and in summer you can also rent pedal boats and explore the area on the water.

If you like things more action-packed, the Paradschier Adventure Mountain is a must: Just a few minutes’ drive from Lenzerheide, you’ll find the longest sledge run in Switzerland! Ride the chairlift up the mountain to reach the starting point. Once at the top, grab a sledge and race down into the valley at high speeds. The sledge run is a genuine highlight for the whole family! But beware: The sledge run is only open in good weather, which is why we were unfortunately denied this adventure.

Interactive rainy weather programme: The Albula Railway Museum in Bergün

The weather gods aren’t in a good mood all weekend: and so we need an alternative programme. We found one at the Albula Railway Museum in Bergün. The incredibly interactive exhibition is perfect for families. You can try out a lot for yourself, build, shunt trains and much more. In addition, children receive a booklet of puzzles free of charge. If solved correctly, they even get a surprise. We definitely recommend the museum!

Flims-Laax region: Nice, nicer, nicest!

On the two days we spent in this region, the sun was on our side again. That’s why we spent all our time outdoors. And to be honest? I can’t decide which of the excursions was my personal highlight – they were all breathtakingly beautiful. So here are four tips for you!

Rhine Gorge

From Versam, you can embark on a circular hike of 1 h 15 min with fantastic views of the Rhine Gorge. On the hike, you’ll pass the Islabord viewing platform, a barbecue spot and a forest playground. Please note: The circular hike is not suitable for pushchairs and is only suitable for families with «sure-footed» kids, as it has some steep and narrow paths.

Flims-Laax treetop walkway

Flims and Laax are connected by an impressive treetop walkway. On the 1.5‑kilometre trail, you’ll find numerous marble runs and other activities you can do with your kids. We find the pushchair-friendly hike very entertaining and varied, and highly recommend it for families.

Lake Cresta

The turquoise-blue Lake Cresta is a natural gem. We enjoy the short walk to the lake and treat ourselves to a tasty snack in the midday sun. During the season, there is a kiosk offering refreshments.

Lake Cauma

Lake Cauma shimmers beautifully in turquoise. You’ll find lots of activities for families here. For one, walk along the Connbächli to the lake. The cool thing about the creek: You can float a boat (one you’ve bought or made yourself) around next to you. For us, the walk flies by in no time! When we arrive at the lake, a playground and catering facilities await us. Now it’s time to soak up the sun and relax. This excursion is also an absolute highlight for families!

Overall impression of our the long weekend in Graubünden

Once again, we noticed: No matter where we are in Switzerland, we’re at home at the youth hostels. There’s always something new to discover, but also a lot of things we’re familiar with. So it’s practically a second home 😊 We had a lot of fun discovering and getting to know a new region again. We were particularly fascinated by the breathtaking nature and countless family-friendly offers in Graubünden. We will definitely be back!
