Swiss Youth Hostels: Our home during our trip

During our family holidays in the Engadin, we stay the night at the Scuol and St. Moritz youth hostels. The two hostels boast a modern yet cosy atmosphere. Plus, the youth hostels are the perfect starting point for any activity and can be easily reached by public transport.

We opted for one of the spacious family rooms in St. Moritz with its own shower and WC. In Scuol, we spend the night in a double room. Did you know that the breakfast buffet is always included in the room rate? No matter which category you book. Both youth hostels also have a cosy lounge with toys, games and table football. In Scuol, there’s even a small pump track for the kids behind the building. What really sets the youth hostels apart: During summer months, public transport and the mountain railways are included from the very first night.

Flurina Adventure Trail

The gondola cableway taking you to the Motta Naluns is located directly opposite the youth hostel. A gigantic sun terrace and a brand-new playground await you here. Make sure to pace yourself, as this is where the Flurina Adventure Trail begins. Along the way, you’ll learn the story of Flurina and the little wild bird. A total of ten stations feature different activities to go along with the story, making for a very entertaining hike. The adventure trail is suitable for pushchairs and is easy to do even with younger kids – you can expect a total walking time of around an hour.

After your hike, wind down in the Bogn Engiadina, where you can bathe in pure mineral water and really relax. The swimming area is super family-friendly. They’ve thought of it all, from family changing rooms to free water wings to borrow. The sauna area is reserved for adults. And you know what? If you stay overnight at Scuol Youth Hostel, you can save another 10% on the admission fee. It’s awesome!

Family holidays in the Engadin: Exploring the area around St. Moritz

In Ursli’s footsteps

On the way to St. Moritz, a stop at Guarda – Ursli’s village – is almost a must. The picturesque Engadin mountain village is where the story takes place, after all. In the village itself, there is a small but exquisite Ursli Museum, which you can visit free of charge.

Ursli themed trail

On the way from Salastrains to St. Moritz, another themed trail awaits you: Along the way, you’ll learn all about Ursli. And there’s a great playground at the starting point, too. I was particularly impressed by the view of St. Moritz, which you can enjoy between the treetops. This path is also suitable for pushchairs and very entertaining, with around 40 minutes of walking time.

High altitude

An absolutely breathtaking backdrop awaits you on the Muottas Muragl. With the guest card from St. Moritz Youth Hostel, this mountain railway is also free of charge. On this mountain you can take a leisurely stroll or a longer hike. We went with the former. This gives us all the more time to enjoy the fantastic playground and the Senda d’Inspiraziun circular trail with its select modern art and breathtaking views.

In St. Moritz itself, you will also find plenty of cool playgrounds that you absolutely must explore! The Bellavita Adventure Waterpark and Spa in Pontresina is a great place to relax. It has a brilliant play area for the young ones and a cool slide for bigger kids.

By the way: the delicious packed lunch, which you can pre-order at the youth hostel, is perfect for our outdoor family holiday adventures in the Engadin! © Yvonne Schönthal

Overall impression of our family holidays in the Engadin

On our Engadin trip, we got to know a beautiful part of Switzerland even better. One big plus was that we were able to use the mountain railways free of charge during our family holidays in the Engadin. Especially in the golden autumn, Scuol and St. Moritz are beautiful and highly recommended as holiday destinations. We spent a total of five days on the road – this allowed us to discover and experience a lot, but also gave us plenty of time for moments of relaxation in between.

Hello breathtaking scenery! This certainly wasn’t the last family holiday in the Engadin for us. © Yvonne Schönthal
