Whether winter holidays or an action-packed weekend in the mountains: Davos is always a great choice! With five ski resorts, you’re not just spoilt for choice where to tear up the trails. There’s also a lot going on off-piste. Professional snowboarder Sina Candrian and her photographer Corsin Näff tested the destination for you and share their insider tips.
Turn night into day on the Rinerhorn
Why not hit the slopes in the dark? You can go night snowboarding, skiing or sledging on the Rinerhorn. The experience is open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. A unique atmosphere awaits you on the illuminated slope. Our insider tip: For the ultimate by night experience, you should plan your trip to fall on the full moon. That’s when things get really mystical!
The early bird catches fresh slopes
Even if it’s hard: It’s worth leaving your cosy youth hostel bed early in the morning to make a pilgrimage up the Jakobshorn. Freshly groomed slopes for all levels await. I took advantage of the empty snowpark to hone my tricks. It offers a playground for beginners to advanced riders.
Dancing with a view in the Jatzhütte
If you’re in the mood to meet new people and shake a leg, you should definitely take a detour to the infamous Jatzhütte. There’s always something going on. You’ll also find secluded spots in the loungers where you can enjoy a warm drink in the sun. But the best thing is the magnificent view of the Graubünden mountains.
A different kind of minigolf
Have you ever heard of ice minigolf? Swap your minigolf club for a hockey stick and try to sink a puck instead of a ball. This winter, the ice minigolf course in the centre of Davos will be set up on Arkadenplatz instead of on Lake Davos from 30 November. Guaranteed fun for young and old alike!
Off to the ice
A dream awaits you: measuring 4,500 square metres, the Davos Eistraum is the largest mobile ice rink in Switzerland. And it’s perfect for letting off steam. Corsin and I battled with strangers in a hockey match. If you prefer to take it easy, you can do laps around the hockey field. This way, no one will get in each other’s way. And if you get hungry or thirsty, you’ll find a cosy spot in the «Chalet Iisstock» or outside on the terrace.
Hockey fever
Don’t miss a hockey match at the local Hockey Club Davos. The atmosphere in the sold-out stadium is simply jaw-dropping and you can feel the decades-old hockey fan culture up close. If you like the energy, it’s best to visit the fan section. Book a seat for a more relaxed experience. Another special highlight is the annual Spengler Cup featuring top international teams, which has been held since 1923. It pays to be quick – the tickets are already on sale.
Stay at Davos Youth Hostel
It goes without saying that we stayed at the youth hostel again during our Davos trip. The Youth Palace is a little higher up yet quite centrally located – with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and the valley. Perfect for savouring a hot drink on the balcony or on the sun terrace. The food also tasted amazing with the sumptuous breakfast buffet and the delicious dinner featuring a tofu and vegetable skewer, potatoes and the varied salad buffet. We’ll be back soon!
