Short trip to Montreux in late summer

Montreux is also known as the «pearl of Lake Geneva». For good reason, we say. We’ll show you what your trip to this picturesque city could look like.

Late summer trip to Montreux

Montreux is a real gem on the shores of Lake Geneva. Surrounded by the lake, palm trees and mountains, the city offers many highlights that are perfect for combining with a stay at our Montreux Youth Hostel.

The journey itself is a highlight

I’m staying at the youth hostel, which is located in the Montreux Territet district and is easily accessible by train. Via Lausanne, I make my way to Montreux, where I am already surprised by the fantastic views.

The glittering Lake Geneva and the lush green grapevines of Epesses, Saint Saphorin and co. are wonderfully beautiful. The vineyard terraces are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Lavaux, Switzerland’s largest wine-growing region. The sight makes you want to enjoy a fine glass of white wine, but one thing at a time.

Taking the funicular railway to Glion

When I check in at the youth hostel, I receive the Montreux Riviera Card, which entitles me to various discounts in the region, including a free ride on the funicular railway from Montreux Territet to Glion. Off I go!

Once at the top, I take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the view over Lake Geneva, the Alps and the beautiful Chillon Castle. If you want to go even higher, you can take the cogwheel railway from Glion to Rochers-de-Naye. Numerous hiking trails and a mountain restaurant await you at an altitude of 2,000 metres.

I head back to the city, where I take a short breather in my room at the hostel. I get to know my roommates. We decide without further ado to put our table football and table tennis skills to the test and have a lot of fun together. Both are provided by the hostel and make getting to know each other easy.

Minigolf in an exotic setting

To get to see even more of Montreux, we check out the minigolf course in the city centre together in the late afternoon. It is situated in a green oasis just a short bus ride from the youth hostel. The 18-hole complex is well worth a visit, whether you are a casual player or a pro. 😉

Stroll along the Montreux Riviera

From the minigolf course we have a direct view of the waterfront promenade, which we take a stroll on a little later. The path is around 13 kilometres long and lined with exotic palm trees, flowers and plants that feel right at home in the Mediterranean climate. Always within sight: The lake with the snow-capped Alpine peaks in the background.

My favourite spot for the sunset

I ended my evening at the youth hostel by the lake. As it turns out, the ideal place to enjoy the sunset. The sun sets just opposite and gives the sky a beautiful tint. Plus a cool drink from the hostel’s self-kiosk – the perfect way to end the day.

Just like on the Mediterranean – à bientôt!

The next morning, I treat myself to a swim in the lake before setting off on my journey home. My recommendations: Be sure to pack your swimwear when visiting Montreux. You can practically hop from your pyjamas straight into your bikini (or swimming trunks) and be in the water in just a few steps. Really cool!
