Winter tip: Lovely sun terraces in the mountains

Bye bye grey, hello blue! While the fog hangs in the lowlands, steel-blue skies await you in the mountains. And what better way to enjoy the weather than with an aperitif? That’s what I’m saying. Here are some of our favourite sun terraces in the mountain youth hostels.

Four sun terraces to counter the winter blues

1. Davos: Arcades with a view

The mountain destination in the canton of Graubünden really has everything winter sports enthusiasts could wish for. From fast-paced sledging and ski runs to leisurely winter hiking tours or exciting ice hockey matches. No wonder that droves of people are drawn to the mountain city every winter.

If you’re tired of the hustle and bustle and want to treat yourself to an aperitif with a magnificent view, Davos Youth Hostel is the place to be. You will find a selection of drinks and snacks in the self-kiosk, while hot drinks are available from the coffee machine. Cosy up with soft furs on the sun terrace under the arcades – while looking out on the mountains of Graubünden. Viva!

3. Saas-Fee: Coffee break in the mountains

Bistro4000 and its sun terrace could hardly be more practical. When the sun comes out and the impressive mountain panorama shines, one step out of wellnessHostel4000 is all it takes to treat yourself to a well-deserved break. The terrace is right in front of the hostel, quiet and sheltered from the wind. Even on chilly winter days, the sun’s rays warm you so you can take off your jacket and relax.

The snack menu is always full of pleasant surprises, including freshly baked cake. Pair it with a cup of coffee and you’ll be all set for your adventures around the impressive four-thousand-metre peaks. Whether hiking routes, snowy mountain tours or winter sports: You can really let off steam in Saas-Fee.

3. Grindelwald: Face to face with the Eiger

Our cosy Grindelwald Youth Hostel is situated slightly above the village. The terrace promises the best views of the town and the massive, world-famous north face of the Eiger. Relaxing on the sun terrace makes you realize just how small you really are.

In the destination itself, one winter highlight follows the next: Skiing, cross-country skiing, winter hiking or sledging – here you’ll be spoilt for choice. A hike along the First Cliff Walk, where the world is literally at your feet, promises a special thrill.

4. Laax: Winter dreams come true

Close your eyes on the sun loungers, dream of your perfect break and realise when you wake up that you’re already right in the middle of it. Mountains, snow and even a lake: You’ll find all this and more right on the doorstep of wellnessHostels3000 in Laax.

From the hostel, you can reach the snowpark or a range of freeride routes in no time at all. And if you’re looking for something more leisurely, the sun terrace is the perfect place to enjoy a delicious lunch. Our favourite is clearly the wellness burger from the Restaurant Yoummi Biblau.
